Mock Car Crash and Wake for Malden High School

Healthy Malden

Healthy Malden and SADD Coordinates Sobering Reminder

On Monday, May 18th, Malden High School students found a two-car accident and injured and dying students right outside the Holden Street door. Fortunately for all, it was a mock crash put on by Healthy Malden and the Students Against Destructive Decisions at Malden High School. This simulated crash was designed to shock students into confronting the reality of drinking and driving and their deadly consequences.

As some students were being placed in handcuffs by Malden Police, others were being tended to by Cataldo emergency personnel with one unfortunate student being loaded into a hearse. After seeing the Malden Fire Department hose the blood off the streets and Sica Automotive cleaning up the damaged vehicles, students filed into the Jenkins Auditorium to attend a Mock Wake arranged by Norton Funeral Home. The stage was adorned with a casket, flowers, and mourners to emphasize the seriousness of this destructive decision.

After SADD members eulogized the deceased, speakers included Julie Briggs, the SADD coordinator at Malden High School, Fran MacDonald of Cataldo Ambulance, and Dana Brown, Principal of Malden High School. The most compelling speaker, however, was Joan Aeschlimann, the Saugus High School nurse who spoke of the prom tragedy that occurred over the weekend at her school. As the reality of the mock moments hit home, many students sat in stunned silence contemplating their own prom less than two weeks away.
“It is vitally important for students to be firsthand witnesses to the deadly consequences of driving after drinking and we hope these lessons stay with them long after they are home safe and sound from their prom,” said Kevin Duffy, Executive Director of Healthy Malden.
